About David

David Potter is a practitioner of contemplative spirituality with experience in social change movements. Through deep listening and compassionate presence, he provides space to deepen inner clarity and sustain outer service. An Episcopal priest in Washington, DC, he is privileged to walk alongside individuals and communities on the path of truth-telling and becoming whole.

On the practice of spiritual direction

Becoming whole is the work of a lifetime—and there is no need to walk the path alone. Spiritual direction, at it's most basic core, is about deep, mutual listening. Whatever led you to consider soul care, however clear or intimidating it may be, it is an honor to bear witness to what is moving in your life and companion you along the way.

A few reasons people seek a spiritual director include the following:

Transition

... a desire for deeper connection

... professional burn-out

... finding sustainable rhythms

... hunger for God

... becoming whole

Centering

Not sure if spiritual direction is for you?

Some seek out a spiritual guide while holding a question that won't seem to leave them alone; others do so following a wondering they struggle to put into words but know is significant. Paying attention to these promptings is the beginning of a centered life. By creating space to be with all that stirs inside—curiosity and doubt, fear and hope—we begin the process of self integration: body, mind, heart, and spirit.

... discerning a major life decision

... grief in the wake of loss

... navigating change and upheaval

... reconstructing faith identity

... awakening to something new
